What I learned from funemployment.

In the beginning 2024 I left my job of 7 years to focus on finishing graduate school. I was in a three year graduate program that included evening classes and required internship hours. At first it was manageable but having a full time job, evening classes and an internship that demanded a lot of time and energy. It made me stressed and decreased my happiness and optimism. I became negative and jaded. It started to impact how I approached my day to day and it wasn’t healthy. I was very fortunate to have the support of my family and friends and I created a safety net savings account. I know my experience won’t be relatable to some but I hope you can find something helpful from my journey. What I learned:

  1. If you can, quit the job. A job is a job. It doesn’t define who you are as a person. Your identity is not your position. Your character defines you.
  2. Reconnect with what makes you happy. Sometimes you can get caught up in the work hustle which is harmful and I hate that it is the norm to mass produce. Prioritize your joy.
  3. Rest. That is all.
  4. Life is short. We have freewill. Do that thing on your bucket list.
  5. Find your consistency.

I am now employed. I am using my degree and I feel excited to be in my new role. I am grateful that I was able to have my funemployment phase because I came back into my job with a new perspective and firm boundaries of how I look at work. I wish everyone well on their work/life balance and I am a firm advocate of doing what is best for you.
