Sommer Martin is a writer, director and producer from Portland, Oregon. She is also my sister in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and my Line Sister. I was really excited to interview her and highlight her amazing film “Another Day” on the blog. Please check out a fun Q+A below. Read more about her on http://www.sommermartin.com/ – Aasha

What makes you unique?
I love the underdog because I often felt like the underdog in my childhood. I have a closer connection to the underdog and so I’m always looking for stories to highlight people who don’t necessarily get the spotlight.
What is your biggest pet peeve – what gets on your last nerve?
Attention whores. It is hard to be around people who believe the world revolves around them. We are all human beings, nobody is greater than the other.
Are you selective about your set?
Now I have more of a say so…now I am the boss. I get to pick and choose what energies I want to be around because that stuff really does transfer. My goal is to create an environment where everyone feels loved and appreciated. The executive producer should not feel like they are better than the audio person. I want an environment where everyone has the same respect for one another.
What’s a favorite way to spend a day off?
This is probably my favorite question in the whole wide world to be asked. For me the perfect day would be: I clean up and listen to some music. I light a candle or some Palo Santo, walk around my house and clean out energies. I pray a little bit and cook a vast amount of something like cioppino with shrimp and mussels or spaghetti. I eat off that all day and watch horror movies back to back. I turn my phone on silent, lay around, drink water, cut off the world, eat and watch scary movies. That is the best thing I could do with my life.
What song always gets you out on the dance floor?
I remember a moment in time where it was Upgrade You by Beyonce. I would just rush to the dance floor. That was a few years ago but right now I don’t really have a song.
What’s your favorite season and why?
I know it’s shocking but summer is not my favorite season; the fall is. It’s still a little warm and it is kinda cold. The leaves are changing and you want to be warm and cuddly and have hot chocolate and be boo’d up. I like the fall because it will cause you to go inside and reflect. The fall helps me ground myself and be appreciative.
Is there a product you couldn’t live without?
Just one? That’s a really hard question. Coconut oil. I use it on my hair and face and lips.
What career advice would you give to your younger self?
Make connections early. I wish someone would’ve told me it was hard to break into mass media. I was so naive graduating from college and I thought I was just going to apply and get right in. I wish at 18, I would have had an internship at a news station or a production house to start creating these relationships.
What makes you feel at peace?
My spiritual life. I have a gratitude journal where I write five things everyday that I’m grateful for. I listen to gospel and I do 10-15 minutes of meditation. That is what helps me be at peace… realizing the big things and little things that are happening in my favor.
Tell us something Good 2 Know
When I feel overwhelmed or have imposter syndrome, I remember: “I deserve to be a part of these conversations.”
