One of my recent devotionals highlights a practice that I would like to share from Divine Direction: 7 Decisions that will Change Your Life by Craig Groeschel “One of the best decisions you can make when you’re feeling an impulse or facing a high-stakes dilemma is the decision to stop. Take a time-out. Pray for guidance. Sleep on it. Get some godly wisdom from people you trust and picture the possible outcomes.”
This devotional was made real when our furnace suddenly stopped working. I called on a friend to take a look at it and eventually called a heating and cooling repair company to diagnose the problem. When the repair person came, I immediately felt distrust. I’ve learned not to push away my instincts, but I kept those feelings in check. I was given three prices to replace my furnace –lowest to highest. I knew that the furnace was barely 10 years old and I shouldn’t need to replace it. They reluctantly gave me an estimate to repair my furnace, including a ridiculous price to replace my thermostat. This was really weird because I wasn’t having problems with the thermostat. I was told that the repairs may not fix the problem and I may still need to buy a new furnace. This did not sit right with me.
I was worried that I was making the wrong choice. What if my furnace really did need to be replaced? Those choices could cost me hundreds of extra dollars to repair a furnace that actually needed to be replaced. I was also thinking I could be getting ripped off and that was going to cost me thousands of dollars that I didn’t have at my disposal. I was extremely stressed out and didn’t know what to do.
I didn’t rush to make a decision. I continued to pray and seek wisdom from God, which led me to seek additional advice from my friend. He gave me the name of another heating and cooling company. The owner started his business to offer solutions that wouldn’t cost customers to spend thousands of dollars.
When I talked with Mike on the phone, I immediately had a positive feeling. When he came to our house, I continued to feel that he was being genuine and fair. Mike checked out our furnace and gave me a reasonable repair estimate. He did not tell me that I needed a new furnace or even a new thermostat. Mike fixed my furnace the same day and it has been working fine ever since.
I thank and praise God for my friend for his advice, for Mike that he was an ethical business person, for wisdom, for patience and peace during this situation.
Philippians 4:6-7 -6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
